Frequently Asked Questions About Membership
No, you do not have to know how to water ski to be a member. Only half of our members actually ski. Many of our members are involved in other aspects of the production of the show. Some have no role in the show, but get involved in fundraising, concessions, or other support roles.
Anyone who wants to water ski with us should know how to water ski. Even though we have a "B" ("junior" or "feeder") program, one should be able to water ski long-line behind a boat. If one simply wants to learn how to water ski, we offer learn to ski clinics throughout the summer. Those who truly wish to advance their water skiing skills and be part of the show are certainly welcome to apply for membership.
Yes, for those who wish to water ski with us, we require that you be able to water ski on two skis using a standard length tow rope.
Everyone who wishes to join, regardless of desired role, must be sponsored by a current or former member. The sponsoring member essentially vouches for anyone he or she recommends for membership. If you do not have a sponsor, you can meet with two officers of the club.
All memberships are subject to the approval of our board of directors. Prospective adult members are subject to a background check as well, to ensure the safety of our members and the integrity of our organization. All new members are considered "probationary" for a period of 90 days beginning on the date they join or May 1, whichever is later.
There are three levels of membership: family, single/individual, and social.
Family memberships consist of two or more members of the same family: husband and wife or parent(s)/guardian(s) and child (children) under age 25, all living in the same household. (Children under age 12 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult at all club functions, including both A and B practices, at all times. Other age restrictions may apply for certain club functions.)
A single/individual membership is available for those age 16 or older by May 1 of the membership year in which the individual is applying.
Social memberships are reserved for spouses of honorary members, parents of single/individual members, past members, parents of past members, or friends of current members.
There are three components of membership dues: Rock Aqua Jays dues, Wisconsin Water Ski Federation (WWSF) dues, and USA Water Ski dues.
All members are expected to work during tournaments, help on scheduled work days, work in concessions, and clean up the bleacher areas after shows during the ski season. Members are also expected to participate in fundraisers and committee work in the off-season.
All members are required at all times to exhibit behavior and attitudes consistent with the positive image of the Rock Aqua Jays. We are ambassadors of our community. All interactions with spectators, sponsors, other teams, officials, and the general public should be done so in an acceptable manner. We treat each other with respect, compassion, and empathy. We take care of our equipment and boats as if the items belonged to each of us, individually.
Members are expected to know the rules, policies, and bylaws of our organization to not only understand what we do and how we operate, but also the parameters for various privileges such as access to facilities, personal use of club equipment, etc.
Members who water ski have unlimited opportunities to develop and enhance water skiing skills to the point of perfection. Many of our members have gone on to work at professional venues such as the Tommy Bartlett Thrill Show, Sea World, Marine World, and Cypress Gardens (now LEGOLAND). Over 100 members had the opportunity to water ski at international competitions and exhibitions in countries including the Peoples Republic of China, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Jamaica, Japan, Germany, India, Jordan, and Australia.
All members have opportunities to be involved in other aspects of the show production including boat driving, riding, sound crew, dock/equipment crew, cast member, and costume design. Other opportunities exist in the areas of concessions, photography, videography, elected office, committee membership, and committee chairmanship.
Benefits of membership include a number of special discounts on merchandise and services offered by sponsors and advertisers. Members frequently have the option to purchase exclusive logo apparel from the Rock Aqua Jays "Boatique" store.
We welcome applications from anyone and everyone who is interested in membership. We offer equal membership opportunities regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, or gender.
One of the only factors that may prevent a person from becoming a member is a serious crime or pattern of crimes that could potentially endanger our members or harm the image of the Rock Aqua Jays.
All prospective adult members are subject to a background check. We reserve the right to refuse membership to anyone as a result of such a background check.
You should contact our Membership Director if you have any other questions about membership.
